Frequently Asked Questions

    Who's eligible?

To be eligible companies must be at least 4 years old, with 10 or more employees at an office in Washington. We will separate companies into four categories: Small (10-50 Washington full-time employees); Medium; (51-100 Washington full-time employees); Large (101 and more Washington full-time employees); and Nonprofit.

How does it work and what are the deadlines to be considered?

To find the best employers, the Puget Sound Business Journal asks readers to nominate their own or other companies starting in February.

Nominations are closed as of April 30, 2008. Thank you for participating.

During the month of May, employees of nominated companies answer surveys conducted by Quantum Market Research of Wichita, Kan. QMR is widely recognized as a leading company in conducting this type of research, and it conducts the same survey for many other business journals in the American City Business Journal's family. Participation in this program is free of charge.

What questions are asked in the survey?

While we cannot guarantee we'll ask the exact same questions as last year, they will be similar questions. For each of the following examples, survey respondents are asked to select: Strongly disagree, Disagree, Somewhat disagree, Somewhat agree, Agree, or Strongly agree.

    • I would like to be working at this organization one year from today.
    • I have a close and trusting relationship with one or more co-workers.
    • I am always thinking about ways to do my job better.
    • My immediate supervisor cares about my development.
    • I trust the leaders of this organization to set the right course.
    • The organization makes investments to make me more successful.
    • The leaders of the organization value people as their most important resource.
    • Considering the value I bring to the organization, I feel I am paid fairly.
    • It would take a lot to get me to leave this organization.
    • We have benefits not typically available at other organizations.

    How are companies selected?

After a company is nominated, it is contacted by the Business Journal and Quality Market Research in early May and invited to participate in the employee survey. A certain percentage of full-time Washington-based employees must complete the survey by the deadline. The required percentages ensure statistical validity. Each qualifying company is ranked according to its composite score as calculated by Quality Market Research. The Business Journal then honors the top scoring companies in each of the four categories. Each that makes that list is considered one of Washington's Best Workplaces and is honored on Aug. 13 at a special celebration at Safeco Field in Seattle. At that time, special awards are bestowed to top scoring companies in each category.

    What happens at the event?

At the event, companies with the top scores in the four categories are given special recognition. Last year, we had some 1,200 attendees at Safeco Field as we celebrated the inaugural year of the program. Photos from the event are featured in the paper and on our web site.
